Sade Sati Calculator: Am I In It Now?

A position, with a start date and an end date.

Check whether Saturn is currently moving through the seven-and-a-half-year cycle around your natal Moon. Arivyah computes both positions from ephemeris data and tells you which of the three phases you are in.

Whether you are in it, and which phase

Sade Sati is the period when Saturn transits the twelfth sign from your natal Moon, then your Moon's own sign, then the second from it. Saturn takes about two and a half years per sign, so three signs is roughly seven and a half years — which is what the name means.

That is the entire definition. It is a position, not a verdict, and it happens to everyone about every twenty-nine and a half years because that is Saturn's orbital period. At any given moment roughly a quarter of all people are in it.

The three phases are described quite differently in the classical texts, which is why being told only that you are 'in Sade Sati' is not much use. Arivyah names the phase, gives the dates it runs between, and reports half Sade Sati separately rather than conflating a two-and-a-half-year transit with a seven-and-a-half-year one.

Saturn's transit through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon — about seven and a half years. This checks today's transit against your Moon.

What it is called

Vedic astrology reached the English-speaking world through several routes, so most concepts here carry a Sanskrit name and one or two translations. They are the same thing.

Sade Satialso called Saturn's seven-and-a-half-year transit, panoti
Saturn passing through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your natal Moon. About 7½ years in total, recurring roughly every 29½ years.
Shanialso called Saturn
The slowest of the classical grahas, about 29½ years to a full circuit. Associated with time, limitation, labour and consequence.
Ardha Kantakaalso called half Sade Sati, small panoti
Saturn in the 4th or 8th from your natal Moon — about 2½ years, read as a milder version of the same pressure.
Gocharaalso called transit reading
Reading current planetary positions against your natal Moon rather than your ascendant. Sade Sati is one result of that method.

The geometry, stated plainly

Saturn orbits the Sun once in about 29.5 years. Seen from Earth against the sidereal zodiac, that means it spends roughly two and a half years in each of the twelve signs before moving on.

Sade Sati is what happens when that slow passage reaches the part of the zodiac your Moon occupies. Saturn enters the sign before your Moon's sign, spends about two and a half years there, moves into your Moon's sign for about two and a half more, then into the following sign for the last stretch. Three signs, about seven and a half years, and then it leaves.

Because Saturn's cycle is 29.5 years, this happens to everyone about every 29.5 years — commonly twice in a life, sometimes three times. Roughly a quarter of all people are in it at any given moment. It is not a misfortune singled out for you; it is a scheduled feature of a slow orbit.

Retrograde motion can complicate the edges. Saturn turns apparently backwards for part of each year, so near a sign boundary it can cross out and back in, which is why a precise answer needs the actual ephemeris positions rather than an approximate table.

The three phases, and what each is said to touch

Treating all seven and a half years as one undifferentiated bad period is the main reason the transit has the reputation it does. Tradition divides it into three, and describes each quite differently.

  • chevron_rightRising phase — Saturn in the 12th from your Moon — the twelfth house is read as loss, expenditure and withdrawal. Classical descriptions mention disturbed sleep, unexpected costs and a sense of things draining away. About two and a half years.
  • chevron_rightPeak phase — Saturn in your Moon sign — Saturn conjunct the natal Moon. Traditionally the heaviest of the three, read as pressure directly on mind and body, and the phase that asks for the most patience. About two and a half years.
  • chevron_rightSetting phase — Saturn in the 2nd from your Moon — the second house is read as wealth, family and speech. Descriptions centre on financial strain and friction close to home, easing towards the end. About two and a half years.
  • chevron_rightWhat tradition says it asks for — Saturn is not read as a malefic that punishes arbitrarily but as one that enforces consequence. The recurring theme across texts is that what was built carelessly gets tested and what was built patiently holds.

Where astronomy ends and interpretation begins

It is worth being exact about which half of this page is which, because most writing about Sade Sati blurs the line completely.

Saturn's position is astronomy. It is measured, published, and checkable against any ephemeris to within a fraction of a degree. Whether Saturn is currently in the twelfth, first or second sign from your natal Moon is therefore a matter of fact, and Arivyah computes it rather than estimating it.

What that position means for your year is interpretation. It comes from classical texts, it is what the tradition holds, and it is not an empirically established effect. Arivyah states it as tradition. Any site that presents the interpretation with the same confidence as the position is misrepresenting one of them.

Questions

What is Sade Sati, exactly?add

It is the period when Saturn transits the three signs centred on your natal Moon — the twelfth from it, then the sign it occupies, then the second from it. Saturn takes about two and a half years to cross a sign, so three signs is about seven and a half years. The name means 'seven and a half' in several Indian languages. That is the whole definition: it is a position, not a verdict.

How do I know if I am in it right now?add

Find the sign your natal Moon is in, then find the sign Saturn is in today. If Saturn is in your Moon sign, or the one before it, or the one after it, you are in Sade Sati. Arivyah computes both positions from an ephemeris and tells you which of the three phases you are in and when it changes, rather than leaving you to count signs.

Is Sade Sati as bad as people say?add

Classical texts describe it as demanding rather than catastrophic, and the difference matters. It is traditionally read as a period that removes what was not built solidly and asks for patience, discipline and realism — the same qualities Saturn is associated with generally. The popular reputation is considerably darker than the texts. It is also extremely common: everyone alive gets it roughly every twenty-nine and a half years, so a large fraction of people are in it at any moment.

What are the three phases?add

Saturn in the twelfth from your Moon is the rising phase, traditionally associated with losses, expenses and unsettled sleep. Saturn in your Moon sign is the peak, associated with the heaviest pressure on mind and health. Saturn in the second is the setting phase, associated with finances, family and speech. They are described as asking for different things rather than being uniformly bad, and Arivyah names which one you are in because the generic warning is no use to anyone.

What is Ardha Kantaka or the small panoti?add

Saturn transiting the fourth or eighth sign from your natal Moon, a shorter period of about two and a half years sometimes called half Sade Sati. It is treated as a milder version of the same theme. Arivyah reports it separately because conflating the two is how a two-and-a-half-year transit gets described as a seven-and-a-half-year one.

Can anything be done about it?add

Tradition prescribes remedies — particular disciplines, charity, mantra. Arivyah reports what the tradition says without claiming it is proven, because it is not, and a site that told you otherwise would be lying to you. What the calculation genuinely gives you is timing: knowing a demanding period has a defined end date is more useful than most advice about it.

How this is calculated

The arithmetic, and where it stops

Both positions come from Swiss Ephemeris data. Your natal Moon's sidereal longitude is computed for your birth moment with the Lahiri ayanamsa; Saturn's is computed for today. The sign distance between them is counted, and Sade Sati is reported when that distance is 12, 1 or 2. Half Sade Sati is reported separately at 4 or 8.

Phase boundaries are real ingress dates rather than approximations, and retrograde motion is handled by scanning for actual sign changes — which matters because Saturn can cross a boundary, turn back, and cross again, and a table of average dates would get that wrong.

The phase you are in is a calculated fact. What the phase is said to bring is classical interpretation, presented as tradition. Arivyah does not claim the effects are demonstrated, and the AI is not permitted to invent a position it was not given.

Positions are astronomy and can be checked against any ephemeris. What a position is said to mean is astrological interpretation, and this site presents it as tradition rather than as established fact. How every chart here is calculated.
