Manglik Dosha Calculator
Where Mars is, and what the tradition actually says about it.
Manglik Dosha — also called Mangal Dosha — is a traditional Vedic compatibility factor based primarily on Mars's placement in the birth chart. Arivyah checks the position, applies the cancellations the tradition recognises, and states which houses it counted.
What Manglik means
It means Mars sits in one of a specific set of houses in your birth chart — most commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th counted from your ascendant. That is the whole condition. It is a planetary position, and it says nothing about your character.
It is also extremely common. Mars spends roughly equal time in each of the twelve houses, so on the five-house definition somewhere around a third of all charts qualify. A condition affecting a third of people is not a rare affliction, whatever weight the term carries in conversation.
Anyone told they are Manglik and not told about cancellation has had half the tradition withheld from them. Several cancellations are classical rather than modern reassurance: Mars in its own sign or exalted, Jupiter or the Moon in aspect, and both partners carrying the condition. Arivyah checks these rather than reporting the raw position and stopping.

What it is called
Vedic astrology reached the English-speaking world through several routes, so most concepts here carry a Sanskrit name and one or two translations. They are the same thing.
- Mangal Doshaalso called Manglik, Kuja Dosha, Mangal Dosh
- Mars placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a birth chart. Kuja is the South Indian name for Mars; the condition is identical.
- Mangalalso called Mars, Kuja, Angaraka
- The graha associated with drive, heat, conflict and courage. Its natural signs are Aries and Scorpio, and it is exalted in Capricorn.
- Doshaalso called affliction, blemish
- A named configuration read as a difficulty. In this tradition a dosha is a factor to weigh, and most have recognised cancellations — it is not a permanent condition.
- Angarak Doshaalso called —
- A different configuration entirely: Mars conjunct Rahu or Ketu. Frequently confused with Mangal Dosha, but not the same thing.
The condition, and how it is counted
Mars is one of the nine grahas, and in any chart it falls in one of twelve houses. Mangal Dosha is the statement that it fell in a particular subset of them.
The most widely used definition counts the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses from the ascendant. The reasoning given in the texts is thematic: the 7th is the house of marriage and partnership, the 4th of home and domestic peace, the 8th of longevity and upheaval, the 12th of loss, and the 1st of the self and body. Mars, read as hot and forceful, is traditionally held to disturb these areas.
Some schools widen it. Counting from the Moon as well as from the ascendant is common, and some traditions also count from Venus, or add the 2nd house. This is why two sites can honestly disagree about whether you are Manglik. Arivyah reports which houses it used and what it found, so the answer is inspectable rather than pronounced.
The cancellations, which are part of the tradition
Anyone told they are Manglik and not told about cancellation has been given half the tradition. Classical texts describe several conditions under which the dosha is considered nullified or substantially reduced, and Arivyah checks them.
- chevron_rightMars in its own sign or exalted — Mars in Aries or Scorpio, which it rules, or in Capricorn, where it is exalted. A graha in dignity is read as acting constructively rather than destructively.
- chevron_rightJupiter or the Moon in aspect — Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars is the most commonly cited cancellation, read as tempering the heat. The Moon in the same relationship is treated similarly in many schools.
- chevron_rightBoth partners Manglik — if both charts carry the condition it is traditionally read as cancelling, on the reasoning that the same intensity meets itself rather than meeting something it overwhelms. This is the most frequently applied cancellation in practice.
- chevron_rightMars in specific signs by house — several texts list sign-and-house combinations that void the dosha — for example Mars in Leo in the 4th, or in Sagittarius in the 12th. Arivyah applies the combinations it can verify rather than a general claim.
- chevron_rightAge — many schools hold the dosha weakens substantially after about 28, when Saturn's first return is complete. This one is widely used and not universally accepted.
What this page will not do
Mangal Dosha is a term that has real consequences in people's lives — matches called off, families pressured, anxiety carried for years. That makes precision about the epistemics more important here than on almost any other page on this site, not less.
The position of Mars in your chart is astronomy. It is computed from ephemeris data and it is checkable. Whether Mars falls in your 7th house is a fact about the sky at your birth.
What that placement means for a marriage is classical interpretation. It is what the tradition holds; it is not an established empirical finding, and there is no evidence base showing that Manglik marriages fare differently. Arivyah reports the tradition as tradition. It will not tell you a marriage is inadvisable, it will not generate a compatibility verdict that overrides your own judgement, and the AI is not permitted to invent a placement it was not given.

Questions
What does Manglik mean?add
It means Mars occupies one of a specific set of houses in your birth chart — most commonly counted as the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from your ascendant. That is the entire condition. It is a position, not a quality of a person, and 'being Manglik' says nothing about your character.
How common is Mangal Dosha?add
Very. Mars spends roughly equal time in each of the twelve houses, so on the five-house definition somewhere around a third to 40 percent of all charts qualify. A condition that applies to a third of humanity is not a rare affliction, and it is worth holding that in mind against the weight the term is often given.
Can Mangal Dosha be cancelled?add
Yes, and the cancellations are part of the classical tradition rather than a modern reassurance. Several are widely accepted: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or in Capricorn where it is exalted; Mars aspected or conjunct by Jupiter or the Moon; both people being Manglik, which is traditionally read as the two cancelling out; and in many schools, age past about 28. Arivyah checks these rather than reporting the raw condition and stopping there.
Does being Manglik mean I should not marry?add
No, and no reputable astrologer would say so. The tradition treats it as a factor to be weighed with the rest of the chart, and it prescribes remedies precisely because it is not read as an absolute bar. Arivyah reports the position, the cancellations that apply, and what tradition says — and does not tell anyone whether to marry, which is not a calculation and not a thing software should do.
Why do different sites give me different answers?add
Because the definition genuinely varies by school. Some count Mars from the ascendant only, some also from the Moon and from Venus; some include the 2nd house, some do not. Arivyah states which houses it counted and from which reference point, so you can see what produced the answer rather than being handed a verdict from an unstated method.
Is Manglik the same as Kuja Dosha or Angarak Dosha?add
Kuja Dosha is the same thing under a different name — Kuja is a name for Mars, used more in South India. Angarak Dosha is different: it refers to Mars conjunct Rahu or Ketu, which is a separate configuration. They get conflated often.
How this is calculated
The arithmetic, and where it stops
Mars's sidereal longitude is computed from Swiss Ephemeris data with the Lahiri ayanamsa, and the house is determined with whole-sign houses counted from the ascendant. Because whole-sign houses are used, the house Mars occupies is the sign it occupies counted from the rising sign — which makes the result stable rather than sensitive to a house-division choice.
The dosha is reported when Mars falls in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, and the report names the house so you can see what triggered it. Cancellations are then checked against the same computed chart — dignity, Jupiter and Moon aspects, and on a match, whether both charts carry it.
Birth time matters here more than for the Moon-based pages, because houses rotate a full circle every twenty-four hours. A time uncertain by an hour can move Mars into a different house and change the answer, and where the time is uncertain the chart says so rather than asserting a house.
The position is astronomy. The reading of it is classical interpretation, presented as tradition and not as a demonstrated effect.
Positions are astronomy and can be checked against any ephemeris. What a position is said to mean is astrological interpretation, and this site presents it as tradition rather than as established fact. How every chart here is calculated.
