AI Astrologer: Vedic Astrology Chat That Calculates First
Your astrology is calculated first. AI helps you understand it.
Arivyah does not ask a language model where your planets are. The chart is computed from Swiss Ephemeris data in Python, and the model receives it as input — to explain, not to invent.
What the AI does, and what it is not allowed to do
Your chart is computed before any model is involved. Sidereal positions for all nine grahas from Swiss Ephemeris data with the Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses, your nakshatra and pada, the Vimshottari dasha sequence to the day, twelve divisional charts, yogas, doshas and strength calculations. All arithmetic, none generated.
Then the finished chart goes to the language model along with your question, and its job is to explain — what a placement is, what tradition associates with it, why your figure differs from the Western one you expected. It reads a chart it did not write.
The constraint against invention is explicit in its system prompt, not a hope about its behaviour: it may not assert a placement, date or score it was not given, and must say so when a figure is unavailable. This matters most where a guess is undetectable — dasha dates are arithmetic to the day, and invented ones look exactly as convincing as real ones.
What it is called
Vedic astrology reached the English-speaking world through several routes, so most concepts here carry a Sanskrit name and one or two translations. They are the same thing.
- Ephemerisalso called astronomical tables
- A table of computed planetary positions over time. Arivyah uses Swiss Ephemeris, which is derived from NASA JPL data and is what professional astrology software runs on.
- Ayanamsaalso called precession offset
- The difference between the sidereal and tropical zodiacs, currently about 24°. Arivyah uses Lahiri, the Indian standard.
- Astronomical calculationalso called the computed part
- Positions, houses, nakshatras, dasha dates, koota scores. Arithmetic, checkable against any ephemeris, and identical in any correct implementation.
- Astrological interpretationalso called the read part
- What a placement is held to mean. Drawn from classical texts, presented as tradition, and not an empirically established effect.
Your astrology is calculated first. AI helps you understand it.
The order of operations is the product. It is worth walking through it precisely, because almost every AI astrology tool does it the other way round.
First, your birth details go to a Python service that computes the chart from Swiss Ephemeris data. Sidereal longitudes for all nine grahas with the Lahiri ayanamsa. Whole-sign houses from the ascendant. The Moon's nakshatra and pada. The Vimshottari dasha sequence, to the day, across five levels of subdivision. Twelve divisional charts. Yogas and doshas by their classical definitions. Shadbala and Ashtakavarga strengths. All of it arithmetic, none of it generated.
Then the finished chart is handed to the language model as input, along with your question. The model's job is to explain — what a placement is, what tradition associates with it, why your figure differs from the Western one you were expecting, what a koota score was actually measuring. It reads a chart it did not write.
The instruction against invention is explicit in its system prompt rather than being an assumption about good behaviour: it may not assert a placement, a date or a score it was not given. If it does not have a figure, it says so instead of producing one.
Generic AI horoscope tools, and this
The comparison below is with the general approach rather than with named products, because the failure mode belongs to the approach.
- chevron_rightWhere positions come from — a generic tool asks a model to produce them, so they are generated text that looks like data. Arivyah computes them from an ephemeris before the model is invoked, and they can be checked against any other ephemeris.
- chevron_rightWhether the guidance knows your chart — generic zodiac advice is written for one of twelve groups. Arivyah's guidance reads your actual placements, so Saturn in Pisces is a fourth-house transit for one person and a tenth for another — genuinely different seasons, not the same paragraph.
- chevron_rightWhether it remembers — a one-off response starts from nothing every time, which is why two sessions can contradict each other. Your computed chart persists here, so the same figures reach the model in every conversation.
- chevron_rightWhether the method is stated — an unstated methodology cannot be checked. Arivyah names the ephemeris, the ayanamsa and the house system on every calculation page, so a disagreement with another source is traceable to a specific choice.
- chevron_rightWhere the line is drawn — generated horoscopes rarely distinguish a computed position from an interpretation of it. Every page here separates the two explicitly, including this one.
What it will not do
A tool that is honest about its method should be equally clear about its limits, so these are stated rather than discovered.
It will not invent a figure. If a calculation is unavailable or your birth time is too uncertain to support one, it says so — an uncertain ascendant is reported as uncertain rather than asserted.
It will not present interpretation as established fact. Positions are astronomy and it says so; what a position means is tradition and it says that too. There is no evidence base showing astrological placements produce the outcomes tradition assigns them, and a tool claiming otherwise would be misrepresenting both the science and the tradition.
It will not give medical, legal or financial advice, and it will not tell you whether to marry someone. A compatibility score is a calculation and a life decision is not, and software is not entitled to the second one.

Questions
Does the AI calculate my chart?add
No, and that is the whole design. Your chart is computed first, in Python, from Swiss Ephemeris data — the same ephemeris professional astrology software uses. Positions, houses, nakshatras, dasha dates, yogas and doshas are all arithmetic, done before any language model is involved. The model then receives that finished chart as input and explains it. It is a reader, not a calculator.
Why does that distinction matter?add
Because a language model asked for a planetary position will produce one. It will be plausible, confidently worded, and frequently wrong — and you have no way to tell. Dasha dates make this vivid: they are arithmetic to the day, and a model guessing them will hand you dates that look exactly as convincing as the real ones. Anything built on invented positions is not astrology by any definition, including astrology's own.
What is the AI actually allowed to do?add
Explain what was calculated, in the register you are writing in, with your own chart as context. It can tell you what a Rahu mahadasha is traditionally held to mean, why your Moon sign differs from the Western one, how a koota score was arrived at, what tradition says about a placement. What it is not permitted to do is state a placement, date or score it was not given — that is an explicit instruction in its system prompt, not a hope about its behaviour.
How is this different from asking ChatGPT for my horoscope?add
A general assistant has no ephemeris, so it has to produce positions from its training data or infer them, and it cannot tell you which it did. It also has no memory of your chart between conversations, so every session starts from nothing and you re-enter your details. Arivyah computes once, keeps the chart, and hands the same figures to the model every time — so two conversations a month apart do not contradict each other about where your Saturn is.
Does it remember my chart between conversations?add
Yes. Your computed chart persists, so the assistant carries your placements, your current dasha and your live transits into every conversation without you restating them. That is also why it can notice that a question you are asking now relates to a period it discussed with you before.
Can I talk to it, or only type?add
Both. There is a text chat and a live voice call, and both read the same computed chart. The voice agent runs under the same constraint — it explains the calculated figures and is not permitted to invent placements.
Which languages does it work in?add
English, Hindi and Hinglish, and it answers in the register you write in. Hindi astrology terminology is native to the tradition rather than translated into it, which matters for accuracy as much as comfort — and for English speakers, Sanskrit terms are explained rather than assumed.
Is an AI astrologer as good as a human one?add
It is a different thing, and worth being straight about. What it does better: arithmetic, availability, patience with basic questions, and never misremembering your chart. What a good human astrologer does that this does not: synthesis across a whole life, judgement about what to emphasise for you specifically, and the responsibility of a person who knows you. Arivyah is built to be accurate about the calculations and honest about the interpretation, not to replace a practitioner.
How this is calculated
The arithmetic, and where it stops
Charts are computed in Python from Swiss Ephemeris data — derived from NASA JPL ephemerides — using the Lahiri ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. This happens before any language model is invoked, and the model receives the finished chart as input.
The model is instructed in its system prompt that it may not assert a placement, date or score it was not given, and must say so when a figure is unavailable. The same constraint applies to the voice agent.
Every calculation page on this site names the ephemeris, the ayanamsa and the house system it used, so a result that disagrees with another source can be traced to a specific methodological choice rather than left unexplained.
Positions are astronomy and can be checked against any ephemeris. What a position is said to mean is astrological interpretation, and this site presents it as tradition rather than as established fact. How every chart here is calculated.
