The sign your mind keeps, not the one your birthday advertises.
In Vedic astrology your Moon sign is traditionally known as the Chandra Rashi. It is calculated sidereally, which is why it is usually one sign earlier than the Western one you know — and it is the position most of a Vedic reading is built on.
What your Moon sign is
Your Moon sign — Chandra Rashi — is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, measured against the fixed stars rather than the equinox. Chandra is the Moon; rashi is a sign.
In Vedic astrology it carries more weight than the Sun sign. Tradition reads it as the mind and the emotional register, and three of the system's working parts take it as their input: your nakshatra is the Moon's lunar mansion, your Vimshottari dasha sequence starts from it, and daily transit reading is counted from it. When someone in an Indian context asks your sign, this is usually the one they mean.
Because it is measured sidereally, it is commonly one sign earlier than your Western Moon sign. That gap is the ayanamsa, currently about 24 degrees, and it is arithmetic rather than a disagreement about your birth.

What it is called
Vedic astrology reached the English-speaking world through several routes, so most concepts here carry a Sanskrit name and one or two translations. They are the same thing.
- Moon signalso called Chandra Rashi, Rashi
- The zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your birth, measured sidereally. Chandra is the Moon; rashi is a sign. Said on its own about a person, rashi almost always means this.
- Sidereal zodiacalso called Nirayana
- The zodiac measured against the fixed stars rather than the equinox. It is what makes a Vedic Moon sign differ from a Western one, and the offset between the two is the ayanamsa.
- Nakshatraalso called lunar mansion
- A finer division of the same circle — 27 segments of about 13 degrees each, rather than 12 of 30. Your Moon has a nakshatra as well as a sign, and it is the more specific of the two.
The 24-degree gap, and why it exists
Both zodiacs divide the same circle into the same twelve signs of thirty degrees. They disagree about where zero is.
Western astrology sets zero Aries at the spring equinox — the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator going north. That is a sensible anchor, but it is not fixed: the Earth's axis wobbles slowly, so the equinox point slides backwards against the constellations at roughly one degree every seventy-two years. This is precession, and it is astronomy rather than doctrine.
Vedic astrology sets zero against the stars instead, which does not drift. Two thousand years ago the two systems agreed almost exactly. They have been separating ever since, and today the offset is about 24 degrees. Arivyah uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard adopted by the Indian government's calendar reform committee, to measure it.
The practical result is that most people's Vedic Moon sign is one sign earlier than their Western one. If your Moon is in the first 24 degrees of a sign tropically, it falls in the previous sign sidereally. That is not one system correcting the other — they are answering slightly different questions — but it does mean a Vedic Moon sign is genuinely a different figure, and worth calculating rather than assuming.
What the Moon carries in Vedic astrology
In Western astrology the Sun sign is the headline. In Vedic astrology the Moon usually is, and it is not a matter of preference — several systems are built on the Moon's position and simply cannot be run from the Sun's.
- chevron_rightYour nakshatra — the lunar mansion the Moon occupied, one of 27. It is a finer reading than the sign, and it carries its own lord, gana, yoni and nadi — the qualities used in compatibility matching.
- chevron_rightYour dasha sequence — Vimshottari dasha, the main Vedic timing system, starts from the Moon's nakshatra. Change the Moon and the entire 120-year sequence of planetary periods changes with it.
- chevron_rightGochara, or transit reading — day-to-day transits are traditionally counted from the natal Moon rather than the ascendant, which is why Saturn in one sign is a different season for two people born the same year.
- chevron_rightSade Sati — Saturn's roughly seven-and-a-half-year passage through the twelfth, first and second signs from your Moon. It is defined by the Moon's position and by nothing else.
- chevron_rightYour traditional name syllable — the nakshatra and pada of the Moon determine the syllable a birth name conventionally starts with — which is why many people in India know their rashi and nakshatra but not their Sun sign.

Questions
Why is my Vedic Moon sign different from my Western one?add
Because the two systems measure from different starting points. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which is pinned to the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is pinned to the fixed stars. The equinox drifts against the stars by about a degree every seventy-two years, and over roughly two millennia that has opened a gap of about 24 degrees. So a Moon at 3 degrees Aquarius tropically is at about 9 degrees Capricorn sidereally — a different sign, from the same position in space.
Do I need my exact birth time for my Moon sign?add
Less than for most things. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so it stays in one sign for roughly two and a quarter days. A time that is off by an hour almost never changes the sign. The exception is a birth near a sign boundary, where it can — and in that case the calculation says so rather than picking one. Your nakshatra is a different matter: those are only about 13 degrees wide, so a rough time can genuinely land you in the wrong one.
Which matters more in Vedic astrology, Moon sign or Sun sign?add
The Moon, and by a wide margin. Vedic astrology treats the Moon as the significator of mind and emotion, and it is the Moon that anchors the two systems that carry most of the practical work: your nakshatra is the lunar mansion the Moon occupied, and your Vimshottari dasha sequence is calculated from it. Gochara — daily transit reading — is counted from the Moon too, not the Sun. When someone in an Indian context asks your sign, they usually mean this one.
Is the Moon sign the same as the rashi?add
In everyday use, yes. Rashi just means sign, and any planet has one, but when the word is used on its own about a person it conventionally means the Moon's sign — Chandra Rashi. That is also the sign used to pick a traditional birth name syllable, which is why it is the one most people know.
What does my Moon sign actually describe?add
Tradition reads it as the texture of your inner life: how you process, what settles you, what you reach for under stress. It is not a personality verdict and it is not a prediction. Read alongside your ascendant, which describes how you meet the world, and the two together are far more informative than either alone.
How this is calculated
The arithmetic, and where it stops
The Moon's position is computed from Swiss Ephemeris data for the exact moment and place you give, then converted to sidereal longitude by subtracting the Lahiri ayanamsa for that date. The sign is the thirty-degree segment that longitude falls in. There is no interpretation in any of that — it is the same arithmetic any ephemeris performs, and you can check the result against one.
Your birth time matters most near a boundary. The Moon covers a sign in about two and a quarter days, so an hour of uncertainty rarely changes the answer; within a degree or so of the edge it can, and the chart reports the degree so you can see how close you are.
What the sign is said to mean about temperament is interpretation, drawn from classical texts. Arivyah presents it as tradition and the AI is not permitted to invent a placement it has not been given.
Positions are astronomy and can be checked against any ephemeris. What a position is said to mean is astrological interpretation, and this site presents it as tradition rather than as established fact. How every chart here is calculated.
